Your donation will help children like Sam

Take a child, let's call him Sam - say he has faced neglect: perhaps his parents aren't around either physically or emotionally. He's not sure when his next meal is or when he should be putting himself to bed.

Without a safe routine and family structure, Sam doesn’t develop a sense that he is a child worthy of care and attention. In his unpredictable world, he may become painfully self-sufficient, incapable of trusting others or of making friends.

If Sam has also been brought up around violence, he is in a constant 'fight or flight' state and unable to calm himself. Because of this, he can't settle in class and misinterprets the normal rough and tumble of the playground as attacks, defending himself aggressively. It's no wonder he doesn’t have the brain space for work and gets into trouble for being disruptive.

What chance does Sam have? Without specialist help, he won’t develop empathy or relate positively to others. This can have catastrophic results, leading to a downward spiral of aggression and anti-social behaviour - with huge costs to society. That's why Sam now requires the support of an expert who can provide the therapeutic relationship he needs to turn his life around.

Make a lifetime of difference to a vulnerable child by supporting Blue Smile's work in schools.
